!Welcome & Bienvenidos!My
name is Cynthia Gonzalez, and I am currently an Elementary Teacher
Resident for the Academy of Urban School Leadership. My portfolio site is
dedicated to providing a glimpse at some of the teaching experiences that I have encountered after an intensive year of training within the AUSL network. My residency experience and University work from National Louis has contributed to my individual growth, learning and
development as an educator. My portfolio will examine planning, instructing, assessing, and analyzing of a specific literacy based learning segment that was conducted with a third grade group of students at the National Teachers Academy. Critical resources from National University classes, my 3rd Grade Residency, and 2nd grade Turn Around Visit have been included in my portfolio to help capture some of the essential practices and philosophies that I will apply as novice educator in a Turn Around Setting at Marquette School Of Excellence.

Belief Statement
As an urban educator, my goal will be to create a welcoming classroom environment that is safe, highly respectful, and “culturally responsive” to both students and their families beyond academic expectations. Through means of a student centered approach for learning, flexible instruction that acknowledges and celebrates multicultural awareness and diversity, as well as an authentic and concrete relationship building process with students and families, I will strive to build a community of life-long learners. (Allen 2008; Charney 1991; Jensen 2009; Le Page 2005; Mantiates 2001; Weinstein 2003). Some of my responsibilities will include being a reflective role model that will promote student/ parent accountability and equity through “economy of language” in helping to create an effective and highly structured environment with clear goals and expectations for the organization of our daily classroom practices. (Charney 1991; Le Page 2005). I acknowledge the expectation of misbehaviors and will respond by using a student strength based approach to problem solving that will adhere to the notion of developing morally, socially, and civically competent students. (Jensen 2009; Le Page 2005). Through the use of highly motivational strategies, authentic-real life learning experiences, and in depth understanding of academic content, I will model to students the essence of being invested in our development and overall learning (Charney 1991; Le Page 2005; Mantiates 2001) Furthermore, I believe that educators must be multifaceted individuals that will encompass several roles within the classroom to adhere to the individual needs of our students and families.
