Literacy Learning Segment: Haiku Poetry
The goal of the learning segment with my third grade class was to introduce students to a specific style of poetry, as means of non traditional form of written expression. Students learned about haiku poems and the specific elements associated with the specific style of poetry. At the end of the learning segment, students were expected to create their own individual poems that were reflective of their individual personalities after modeling and demonstration by the teacher, as well as guided practice on the syllabication processes involved with creating haiku poems.
The video clip above captures the initial lessons of the Haiku learning segment. Students are first introduced to the lesson by the use of an activator to help students comprehend the process of visualization. Students are given the opportunity to discuss their own individual interpretations of the imagery they created as students made"mini movies" in their heads. Students were then introduced to Haiku poems and the specific elements correlated with that type of poetry. Students were also re-introduced to syllables, as well as given a model/demonstration of how to identify the number of syllables using names of peers.
During day two of the learning segment, students were reminded and given guided practice of the syllabication process involved in developing haiku poems. As a whole group students practiced identifying the number of syllables in a teacher generated poem, before given the task of listening to a nature audio to create a vocabulary bank of words and or phrases that could be used to create a whole group poem on nature.
